Edgewood College Responsibility
By its very nature, the information surrounding the H1N1 virus changes
rapidly; the College will communicate often on this topic throughout this
academic year. Please do your part by checking Edgewood Express for Campus
Announcements, and by carefully reading your College e-mail.
We have a posted a self-assessment tool provided by the Mayo Clinic if you have questions or concerns about your flu-related symptoms.

If you get sick
- Stay home from class and work at the first sign of flu symptoms.
- Contact your physician and/or Jan Zimmerman, Director of Health Services (608) 663-8334, if you have flu symptoms or are diagnosed with H1N1.
- Contact your instructors and negotiate course responsibilities.
- Notify your supervisor and follow the guidelines of your department if you have flu-like symptoms and will be missing your internship, clinical site, educational field experience or student teaching.
- Notify your supervisor if you have a job on campus and will be missing work.
For resident students - If you experience flu-like symptoms, you will need to adhere to the following guidelines:
- For resident students who live locally and come down with flu-like symptoms, we recommend that you return home to recuperate. Call the Residence Life Office at 608-663-3228 to inform them that you are sick and leaving campus. Stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever or signs of a fever are gone (without the use of fever-reducing medications).
- For resident students who remain on campus to recuperate, you
are required to …
- Call the Residence Life Office at 608-663-3228 to inform them about your symptoms
- Contact your physician or the Edgewood College Health Center.
- Call Jan Zimmerman, Director of Health Services (608) 663-8334, to inform her that you are ill and to ask her for a mask.
- Resident students who have flu-like symptoms will be isolated and may be moved to a designated location.
- Residents will be required to stay in their designated location. When going out of the designated area for any reason, wear a mask.
- The Residence Life Staff and Security Staff will coordinate meal deliveries.
- Rules will be lifted after at least 24 hours after your fever or signs of a fever are gone (without the use of fever-reducing medications).
Steps You Should Take Now
- We have completed our seasonal influenza clinics in Wingra Commons, and in Dominican, Regina and ‘Stevie’ Residence Halls. There is still vaccine available for faculty, staff and students however. If you are interested in receiving a vaccine please call Health Services at 663-8334 to make an appointment.
- Support your own good health with frequent hand washing.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Influenza virus spreads through close contact with respiratory droplets, which generally means touching a contaminated surface with your hands and then touching your hands to your face.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing (or a shirt sleeve or elbow if no tissue is available).
- These are powerful precautions you can take right now – it’s impossible for every surface to be disinfected every time anyone touches it.
