Notes: The first exhibition in the BMO Harris Gallery Series for 2012-2013, Loose Strife presents a series of works created through collaboration by the poet Quan Barry and the visual artist Michael Velliquette. In classical terms, the title of the exhibition stems from a translation of the Greek name Lysimachus, the name describing one who makes war, who literally “looses battle” on the world. In this context the works in the exhibition are inspired by the brutality of Aeschylus’ ancient Greek tragedy The Oresteia, an archetypal narrative of internecine conflict.

Born in Saigon and raised on Boston’s north shore, Quan Barry is Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she recently directed the MFA Program in Creative Writing. The author of three books published by the University of Pittsburgh Press (Asylum, Controvertibles, and Water Puppets), her work has appeared in such journals as the Georgia Review, the Kenyon Review, Ms., and the New Yorker, and among her awards are an NEA Fellowship, a Pushcart Prize, and a Wallace Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University. She is currently at work on a novel.

Michael Velliquette is a mixed media artist known for his dimensionally complex paper sculptures, installations, and drawings. Velliquette’s work is represented by DCKT Contemporary, New York and David Shelton Gallery, Houston. Velliquette was recently picked to be the Dane County artist representative for EUARCA+2012, an artist residency in Kassel, Germany. His museum exhibitions include Slash: Paper Under the Knife at the Museum of Art and Design New York and Psychedelic at the San Antonio Museum of Art. Velliquette is currently a Faculty Associate in the Art Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Lecturer at Madison College.

An artists’ reception, sponsored in part by OPEN Madison, is scheduled for 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm, Thursday, November 15, at the Edgewood College Gallery.

This event is presented as part of the Year of the Arts at Edgewood College, a celebration of music, theatre and art for 2012-2013. Supporters of our Year of the Arts programming include the Kohler Foundation, BMO Harris Bank, the Madison Arts Commission, with additional funds from the Wisconsin Arts Board, DANE Arts with additional funds from the Pleasant T. Rowland Foundation, Native Capital Investment, and the Ahrens-Washburn Community Fellows Program.
