(November 30, 2012) –To celebrate its 20th anniversary year, Madison’s Simpson Street Free Press will host a series of lectures called “Achievement, Journalism, and Today’s Young People.” The series is co-sponsored by Edgewood College. University of Wisconsin-Madison Vice Chancellor Darrell Bazzell will deliver the first lecture in the series.
This inaugural lecture is set for 7:00 pm, Tuesday December 4, 2012, in Anderson Auditorium at Edgewood College. In addition to the lecture, SSFP will present its annual William T. Evjue awards, which recognize support of youth journalism. This year’s honorees are Marc Eisen, Jane Coleman, and Mandy Kroninger. Current Simpson Street Free Press students will present the awards.
Mr. Bazzell is the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration at UW-Madison. He has been active in numerous community service and professional organizations. He presently serves on the boards of the Gathering Waters Conservancy, United Way of Dane County, Urban League of Greater Madison, and the Boys & Girls Club. He is the former president of 100 Black Men of Madison and the Wisconsin Association of Black Public Sector Employees.
“We asked Mr. Bazzell to kick off this series because he symbolizes the kind of innovative thinking we need to bridge local achievement gaps,” says SSFP managing editor Deidre Green. “As proud UW students, the editors of SSFP are honored that he accepted.” The lecture series will focus on exploration of solutions to bridge the achievement gap in Greater Madison.
“Local young people know the SSFP brand,” says assistant editor Ashley Crawford. “We’re interested in serious discussions about achievement. For local kids, Mr. Bazzell is a symbol of achievement.”
Marc Eisen is a freelance writer and columnist and former editor of Isthmus. Former Madison Community Foundation president Jane Coleman has served as a teacher and editor in the SSFP newsroom for five years. Mandy Kroninger is a UW-Madison journalism alumna who currently works as an editor at Epic Systems in Verona.
