College Named to Presidential Honor Roll for Community Service Edgewood College Recognized for Sixth Consecutive Year

Madison, Wis. (March 21, 2013) – The Corporation for National and Community Service has honored Edgewood College with a place on the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to America’s communities. This marks the sixth consecutive year the College has been so recognized.
This year’s award specifically recognizes three areas of the life of the College: COR2, the Bonner Leader Program, and LEAP 2 College.
Drawing from its foundation in the Dominican tradition, Edgewood College places study, reflection, and action for the common good at the center of a liberal arts education. The heart of the Edgewood College General Education program is the COR curriculum, named in recognition of the College motto, Cor Ad Cor Loquitur, Latin for “heart speaks to heart.” COR experiences encourage
students to examine the connection between their learning, beliefs, and actions in order to build a more just and compassionate world.
All undergraduate degree-seeking students at the College must complete 3 courses (COR 1, COR 2 and COR 3) as part of their general education requirements. Students explore the COR questions, (who am I and who can I become?, what are the needs and opportunities of the world?, and what is my role in building a just and compassionate world?) throughout the three levels of COR. During sophomore or junior year, students partake in COR 2 and choose an intensive experiential learning pathway, either service learning, study abroad, undergraduate research, field experience/internship, or civic leadership opportunities, which all provide meaningful community-based learning experiences. Through COR 2 courses, most students are required to complete at least 10 hours of community engagement with community partners, including local community centers, community gardens, schools, advocacy organizations, and other direct-service providers. Examples of community service projects students engage in through COR 2 courses include developing community awareness campaigns for healthy eating, volunteering in youth service programs,
tutoring immigrants in English language skills, and providing income tax assistance. During the 2011-2012 academic year, approximately 241 COR 2 students completed 5509 hours of community service through their COR 2 courses.
The Bonner Leader Program
The Bonner Leader Program strives to develop informed, engaged, just and compassionate leaders through student involvement in community service. Students are selected and serve in the Bonner Leader Program for two full years, engaging in community service placements consisting of a minimum of 300 hours/year per student. Students complete their service work in teams at non-profit agencies, with which the college shares an on-going partnership, assuring their continued access to talented and committed volunteers. Community partners with which Bonner Leaders serve in teams include: Domestic Abuse Intervention Services, St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, Salvation Army homeless shelter, and YWCA women’s shelter. As a complement to community service, students are provided with individual mentoring from staff and peer leaders, as well as group trainings on academic, civic, and personal growth.
By their second year in the program students are expected to take on more challenging roles within the program, including the leadership of one or more teams of student volunteers at a community
organization. Students enrolled in the Bonner Leader program are also part-time AmeriCorps members, receiving a partial education award upon successful completion of the Bonner Leader program requirements which Edgewood College matches with a tuition scholarship of the same amount. From 2011-2012, 31 Bonner Leaders at Edgewood College completed a total of 5,394 direct service hours.
Leap 2 College.
In 2010, Edgewood College and the Lussier Community Education Center (LCEC) began a partnership in collaboration with Wisconsin Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA Community-Campus, focused on the broad theme of college access for traditionally underrepresented populations. From this partnership and grant funding from Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation, made possible by the Wisconsin College Access Challenge Grant, LEAP 2 College began in 2011 as a college access tutoring and mentoring program.
The ultimate goal of LEAP 2 College is to provide students, grades 3-8, with the skills and
resources needed to successfully pursue a college education. The program is designed to ensure the success of the students through twice weekly tutoring, academic enrichment, and visits to the Edgewood College campus three times per year. Early exposure to college and career options helps students to create their own goals and make them a reality as they continue their education. At the
core of all programming is the desire to empower students to take control of their educational future by supporting the development of their personal skills and sharing community resources and insight into higher education. During the 2011-2012 academic year, 49 Edgewood College mentors and tutors volunteered 868 hours serving 23 LCEC students and their families.
About the Community Service Honor Roll
Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award are chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.
