Notes: Madison artists Martha Glowacki and Holly Cohn present works that reflect their sense of shared values and views of their deeper relationship to the natural world.
The two first met in the late 1970’s in the metalsmithing studios at UW-Madison. Throughout the years, their friendship has grown, and they continue to develop as artists. Four years ago, Cohn’s husband, photographer Bob Rashid, died suddenly. Cohn, grieving deeply, felt unable to work in her studio. Looking for a way to help, Glowacki suggested that they create an exhibition together. Paths that Cross…is the result.
“I hadn’t fully realized the depth that this collaboration would bring to me,” Glowacki says. “Working with Martha gave me a sense of place and companionship with life, thoughts that translate into the mystery and inevitability of loss and connection.”
Cohn reflects, “As we worked together on this exhibition, we had long talks about the deep meaning that studio work holds for both of us. Our art practice clarifies our place in this world and opens possibilities for thinking about the next. We work and move forward.”
This event is presented as part of the Year of the Arts at Edgewood College, a celebration of music, theatre and art for 2012-2013. Supporters of our Year of the Arts programming include the Kohler Foundation, BMO Harris Bank, the Madison Arts Commission, with additional funds from the Wisconsin Arts Board, DANE Arts with additional funds from the Pleasant T. Rowland Foundation, Native Capital Investment, and the Ahrens-Washburn Community Fellows Program.
