CPAELL - Courses, Schedule & Cost

CPAELL provides opportunities for candidates to:

  • Critically examine issues, trends, and current research in the field of adult ESL
  • Create learning experiences that emphasize culturally responsive literacy and discourse for the adult learner
  • Develop an awareness of second language acquisition for the adult English language learner
  • Utilize adult learning principles in relation to ESL curriculum design, assessment, and instructional strategies for multi-leveled ELLs

 ED 605H:  Paradigms in Adult ESL Education (3 graduate credits):  This course will explore the sociolinguistic aspects of bilingualism and English language development. Students will learn about the history of US immigration trends, processes of acculturation, and an historical overview of language instructional models.  Theoretical assumptions and research pertaining to sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic components of ESL instruction will be explored with an emphasis on developing culturally responsive literacy and discourse practices for the adult learner.

 COST:  $636 total tuition ($212 per credit)

 ED 604J:  Second Language Acquisition for Adult Learners (3 graduate credits):  This course provides a comparative overview of first and second language acquisition theories and practices and explores the factors that motivate and influence additional language acquisition for adult learners.   Students will explore adult learning principles and development in relation to curriculum design, assessment, and instructional strategies for teaching multi-leveled ELLs.

 COST:  $636 total tuition ($212 per credit)

Is online learning right for you?

Online learning is a very different experience from a face-to-face class. Many students find that an online course takes more of their time. For some, learning to use the technology (Blackboard) and communicating almost solely in writing can be challenging. Edgewood College faculty and staff will provide the guidance and support you need to be successful in the program and transformed by your experience as an online learner.

Although the online learning experience at Edgewood College offers much more flexibility than a face-to-face class, the schedule isn’t like a self-paced correspondence course. The courses are taught in modules. There are requirements and expectations like any other graduate courses. Participants enroll in both courses to complete the CPAELL program.  

Completion of the online modules requires 30 hours plus an estimated eight to ten hours necessary for completing assignments. Assignments consist of academic readings, full-class and small group online discussion, blogs, wikis, and other online learning tools, as well as the completion of several projects during each term. A typical module takes 8-10 hours to complete. This commitment compares favorably to the total amount time a typical 3-credit graduate course requires in face-to-face class time plus outside classroom work.
