Application Deadline Extended to March 1 for the International Study Tour to China |
|
|
This May 24 - June 2, 2013 tour of Beijing, Shanghai and Suzhou is designed for business graduate and RAAD students, alumni, and guests, with the aim of providing critical insights to and valuable, first-hand experiences with China's business climate, culture, and history. In addition to tours of Chinese, U.S. and joint-venture businesses, students will meet business executives to discuss challenges and opportunities in this exciting emerging market, attend lectures on the Chinese economy and culture and tour historic and cultural sites.
Additionally, the estimated trip costs have been updated. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is now an even better value: MBA 3 credits ($776 per credit) + $2,050; RAAD 4 credits ($385 per credit) + $2,850; or the trip only (non-credit) is $3,600. For one week, Career Services was located in the Washburn Heritage room. The joint event together with the School of Business, the Alumni Offices and Financial Literacy Services brought students everything they needed to help them plan their career: job search workshops, money management seminars, alumni speakers, and interviews!

Simpson Street Free Press Distinguished Lecture Series |

On February 2, 2013, the Simpson Street Free Press held their first event as part of their newly created Distinguished Lecture Series in Anderson Auditorium at Edgewood College. Simpson Street Free Press is Madison's premier youth newspaper, and turned 20 this past year. The featured speaker was the Urban League of Greater Madison's president, Kaleem Caire. He elaborated on the series' theme, "Achievement, Journalism, and Today's Young People." More information can be found here.

Let's Do Lunch! Edgewood College Brings Lunch to John Deere Financial |

What a great group, and a very fun way to spend the lunch hour this past November when the Edgewood College alumni staff brought lunch to alumni working at John Deere Financial. This informal gathering provided the perfect atmosphere to reconnect and talk about how Edgewood College has been recognized nationally, new program offerings, and the overall College growth. John Deere Financial in Madison currently has over 16 alumni employees.

New Graduate Student Initiation and Orientation |

Dean Marty Preizler, the Director of Program Development, Kathryne Auerback, and various faculty members met with new graduate students at The School of Business for an initiation and orientation event on January 22. In addition to a Strengths Based Leadership Assessment activity, faculty members shared their best classroom moments. The event concluded with a meet and greet mixer with current students.

Full Compass Facility Tour in December |

 Business students of Fazel Hayati's Operations Management class, as well as Dean Marty Preizler, visited Full Compass Systems, LTD in December. Full Compass Systems is a nationwide mail-order business that grew out of a professional sound studio, and is now a leading retailer of pro audio, pro video, AV, lighting and musical instruments. It is a family-owned business with over 180 employees, and creates annual sales exceeding $100 million. It was recognized as the third largest woman-owned business in Wisconsin. |

New Programs Up and Running
The MBA in Health Systems Leadership and the Project Management Graduate Certificate launched January 2013. The MBA in Health Systems Leadership (and Graduate Certificate in Health Systems Management) prepares future executives to make a meaningful difference in a wide range of healthcare delivery and financing organizations. In addition to administrative managers, the program is well suited for clinicians, attorneys, accounting professionals, insurance agents, and consults serving healthcare clients.
The Graduate Certificate in Project Management prepares current and future executives to lead highly successful projects. In addition to current and aspiring business leaders, administrators, and project managers, the program also serves business analysts, developers, and project team members in insurance, healthcare, government and many other sectors. The Concentration and Certificate programs are aligned with the Project Management Institute's Book of Knowledge.

Fazel Hayati Presents at The Institute Of Industrial Engineers Annual Conference in San Juan |
|
 Fazel Hayati, PhD, will be presenting the preliminary findings on two working papers at the Institute of Industrial Engineers annual conference in San Juan in May 2013. "Some Perspectives on the Application of Little's Law" investigates variability in the application of Little's Law, , from the viewpoint of Shewhart Control Charts. "Using Regression Control Charts" reexamines the foundations of regression control chart and presents cases where they have been effectively used. Instructions for setting up and interpreting regression control chart will be presented.

 In a web-exclusive feature, Professor Amy Gannon, DBA, Co-Founder of the Doyenne Group, talks about gender imbalance in the entrepreneurial environment. The Doyenne Group is an organization dedicated to supporting women's entrepreneurship. Through monthly meetings and other events, they strive to 1) create space for women to talk with each other about their entrepreneurial aspirations and endeavors, 2) provide developmental opportunities for women to grow as entrepreneurs/leaders and build their ventures, and 3) to facilitate and increase women's participation in the broader entrepreneurial ecosystem.  Margie Afifi, BS in Accounting '89, works as Controller for Journey Mental Health Center, Inc. Journey Mental Health Center (formerly Mental Health Center of Dane County, Inc.) is a private non-profit outpatient mental health center serving the Dane County area.
Edgewood College: Please tell us about your professional path and your proudest accomplishments since graduating.
Margie Afifi: I progressed professionally with each new job that I took, from my early role as an accountant to my current role as controller. I am proud of several periods of my professional life in which a lot was required of me and I was successful in achieving my goals. For example, when I worked at Physicians Plus Insurance Corporation and the accounting department moved to Wausau, I was the last remaining person in the accounting department. From Physicians Plus, I went to Journey Mental Health Center, which is a private non-profit outpatient mental health clinic.
EC: How did your Edgewood College degree help you achieve this?
Margie Afifi: Without a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, I would not have been hired as accountant at U-Care (now Unity), which started my career in the health care field. That position led to my job as accounting supervisor at Physicians Plus Insurance Corporation, which then led to my current position as controller at Journey Mental Health Center. I owe Al Talarczyk a debt of gratitude for being an excellent accounting professor. I took a number of accounting and business classes taught by him. I am also grateful to Elaine Beaubien. My marketing project in her Marketing class was a healthy fast food restaurant, which I still think is a good idea.
EC: That is a great idea! How has your experience at Edgewood College helped you to make a difference in your community?
Margie Afifi: I work at a private non-profit corporation and our work touches the community every day. The Human Issues project that is required of all Edgewood College graduates provided a foundation of looking at issues with compassion and understanding.
EC: And how about continuous learning? What are you reading now?
Margie Afifi: I enjoy reading a lot. I like to read current events and politics. For personal enjoyment I read biographies and spiritual books. One of my favorite things to do is to browse through new or used book stores looking for that "treasure" book. |

 Join us in congratulating Kristopher Gmur, who was featured in "40 Under 40: The 2013 Class" in InBusiness Magazine. Kris works as Vice President Business Banking for JPMorgan Chase, and volunteers for the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center, the Village of New Glarus Community Development Authority, and the Dane County Small Business Awards. Lisa Hartman, MBA '11, opens Out-U-Go! Franchise in Madison
|
|
 Congratulations to Lisa Hartman, who opened a new Out-U-Go! location in Madison in January. Out-U-Go! provides professional, personalized dog walking and pet care services for all of the family pets with the ultimate mission to make the world a better place for pets and people. Lisa previously spent 15 years in senior level positions with US Cellular, where she concentrated on creating superior customer experiences. She is looking forward to applying these experiences in her own business in addition to her strong educational background and passion for animals. |
