Micah 7:14-15; 18-20. Shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your inheritance, that dwells apart in a woodland, in the midst of Carmel. Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old; as in the days when you came from the land of Egypt, show us wonderful signs.
| In Lent, I look
to Scripture for inspiration and for comfort. Micah’s words provide comfort in a
difficult season. Continuity in relationship is critical in Scripture, and to us as
affirmation of connection to one another and to God over time. Micah speaks with
confidence of God’s care for the flock, of God’s wholly unique self; remembers Abraham,
and speaks of Moses whom God knew by name. Micah promises a future of relationship in
which God will show faithfulness to Abraham and unswerving loyalty to Jacob and, by
extension, to us. Micah calls on God to shepherd the flock. I know myself one of God’s flock because Jesus speaks of himself as a shepherd whose sheep recognize the sound of his voice. These verses remind us and reassure us. God’s care for the flock is reliable. It was and is and is to come. Thanks be to God. - Linda Newman, Graduate Student Edgewood College Religious Studies Graduate Program |
