Esther C:12, 14,16, 23-5. Queen Esther, seized with mortal anguish… prayed to the Lord, the God of Israel, saying: “…You alone are God. Help me, who am alone and have no help but you, for I am taking my life in my hand.”

The great monk, Milarepa, had many battles in a cave, slaying monster after monster. When his sword was poised to behead the last one, he looked into its eyes and saw his own reflection. He took the path of enlightenment thereafter. There is no enemy outside us that is not first within.

Queen Esther beseeches God, deep in her time of darkness – that cave we must all enter. Seeds of new life wait there, for darkness is also a womb. To reach the light, there is great pain and pressure through the birth canal. We too often run from darkness. We must enter it deeply, down, down, to reach the light of God, the Divine within. Look long upon a newborn’s face, a flower, or a leaf that has just unfurled. Light without darkness is not and will never be. There is a motion between them that gives birth to all form, God in endless creation, in bottomless Love.
