Isaiah 55:10-11. Thus says the Lord: Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.

I encountered this passage on January 12, 2009 – one week before we remember a man of words who had a dream, and one week and one day before we celebrate another man of words who, through the “content of his character” achieved his dream. Just as Barack Obama has the audacity to confront the “rain and snow” of immense secular woes armed with a faith that those woes can be set right, we, too, should work through our troubles with the faith that somehow therein are the seeds to contentment.
