Genesis 37:3-4, 12-13, 17-28. Israel loved Joseph best of all his sons, for he was the child of his old age; and he had made him a long tunic. When his brothers saw that their father loved him best of all his sons, they hated him so much that they would not even greet him.
| Joseph, being the favored son,
suffered the brutal jealousy of his brothers. They hated him for being first
in the heart of their father. I find myself reflecting on the actions of the
brothers: How easily do I find jealousy when I look on another’s success? Do
I compare the favor some receive against my own? We possess frailties. We all desire to be loved. How does my desire to be loved color my actions, my thoughts? Later in Genesis, Joseph lives as a slave in Egypt. All his efforts are met with success because “the Lord was with Joseph and he prospered.” Joseph was filled with Love, and because of that, how could he help but prosper? When I take the time to reflect on my many blessings, I too feel overcome by the love of it all. What blessings might you discover in your life? - Albert Pinsonneault, Assistant Professor of Music |
