Leviticus 19:1-2, 11-18. Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your fellow citizens. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

The biblical text teaches that we should love our neighbor as we love ourselves; unfortunately, we live in a highly individualistic society, and have forgotten the true meaning of community. Instead of giving, we take. Instead of sharing, we hoard. Instead of spreading love and peace, we spread hatred and war. We are constantly at odds with one another, particularly over material possessions. These habits run counter to the laws set forth by God, habits which are unacceptable.

In these trying times, we must look at ourselves and ask the questions: Am I an agent of war, or an agent of peace? Am I part of the problem, or part of the solution?

We must learn the value of forgiveness, abandoning all thoughts and plots of revenge against our neighbors close, far, and wide. We must remember that material possessions are temporary. We must do more giving, particularly to those who can’t give back. We must pool our resources, and distribute them fairly. We must all become agents of peace and part of the solution.
