Jeremiah 31:10-13. Shouting, they shall mount the heights of Zion, they shall come streaming to God’s blessings…They themselves shall be like watered gardens, never again shall they languish.
| As the cold
gray days of winter finally begin to pass, I find myself drawn toward the
promise of this passage that God will make people “like watered gardens,
never again” to languish. A well-watered garden requires two things: water
and good soil. Where there are rocks, the water runs off, and if there is
sand the water sinks away quickly. Rich, dark loam is best, so that the soil
holds the water and makes it available to growing plants. When it comes to God's people I do not doubt that God will provide abundant water, but I wonder if I have the kind of soil that will hold this water, making it available for the growth that God desires. As a daughter of Eve I am surely dust, and so I pray that when God sends water this Lenten season, God also touches the soil of my heart, preparing it to receive, hold, and ultimately sanctify God's gifts for service to God's people. - Jill Kirby, Visiting Professor, Religious Studies Department |
