Psalm 7:2-3, 9-12. Bring the malice of the wicked to an end; uphold the innocent, O God of justice, who tries hearts and minds. A shield before me is God who saves the honest heart.

Within the text, I found myself drawn to the phrase, “O God of justice, who tries hearts and minds.” I enjoyed this phrase because I feel it has a deeper meaning to how someone is brought to justice. It looks at each person with the goal of seeing who has a conscience free from guilt, who has a heart not weighed down by regret or remorse; those that are able to live with themselves with a lifted heart and mind.

The passage is a reassuring notion that if you live life being true to yourself and everyone around you, God will be just because God can see everybody’s true identity. These ideas tie into the phrase that “A shield before me is God who saves the honest heart.” If people truly live in honesty, then they have nothing to fear.
