Isaiah 65:17-21. For thus says God: ‘Lo, I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the things of the past shall not be remembered or come to mind.’

We all have a tendency to decide what is true and not true, to become fixed in our ideas, and so we close our souls to new words, new people, new possibilities, new ways of understanding the ancient truth of God’s love. Lent comes along to shake us up, to remind us that the call to conversion is constant. If we want Lent to work, we have to let God free us from anything that closes our minds.
