“I have always had a passion for art. I chose Edgewood College because I could get one-on-one attention from professors, yet still have the college life atmosphere in Madison. I think the College has a fantastic Graphic Design program and helped me immensely to prepare for the real world. Portfolio preparation is key in the creative field and Professor Agnieszka Ligendza did a fantastic job at helping me build a portfolio.
“Working at Hallmark is a great experience! It’s a fun and creative environment. I don’t think I can see myself anywhere else but in humor. We sit around and doodle on photos, watch episodes of 30 Rock for inspiration and have the opportunity to take puppet workshops for creative renewal (now THAT was fun!).
“Not only do I get to illustrate greeting cards, I also get the opportunity to design merchandise packaging, illustrate children’s books, design Hallmark Gold Crown retail displays and I have even gone on some photo shoots! I love to come into work and feel like every day is a new creative challenge for me.
“People asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I didn’t say the normal thing an 8 year old would say. I told everyone I wanted to design greeting cards. I can now say that it’s my job and I think that’s pretty neat.
“In 2010, I started entering Hallmark’s card contests. I developed a friendship with one of the judges and she told me about an opening at Hallmark – ‘Humor Artist’ to illustrate cards for the humor department (such as Shoebox Cards). Before I knew it, I did a phone interview which led to an in person interview at Hallmark’s headquarters in Kansas City. I put together a portfolio of my best work and was very honest and open during my interview. A few weeks later I got a call offering me the position! It was probably one of the happiest moments of my life - I won’t lie, I cried!”
