Human Issues
The Human Issues Studies Program (HISP) is a campus-wide academic program designed
to link students' educational experiences to real, personal, and community-based issues.
Human Issues (HI) is a 3-4 credit graduation, general education capstone requirement
for degree- seeking undergraduate students. A HI is a significant problem that
challenges personal values and society as a whole; it is understood through diverse,
often conflicting, perspectives; and it involves inquiry into complex questions.
Some of the many ways in which Edgewood College students have engaged with the community through Human Issues include:
- Constructing oral histories for end-of-life hospice patients and their families
- Traveling to Guatemala to provide health care and education in impoverished areas
- Writing, producing, and performing an educational theatre production on global warming to elementary school audiences
- Volunteering at a diverse community center to help implement initiatives intended to reduce the achievement gap
- Sponsoring a campus-wide eco-olympics to raise environmental awareness among college students
