Human Issues

children singing The Human Issues Studies Program (HISP) is a campus-wide academic program designed to link students' educational experiences to real, personal, and community-based issues. Human Issues (HI) is a 3-4 credit graduation, general education capstone requirement for degree- seeking undergraduate students. A HI is a significant problem that challenges personal values and society as a whole; it is understood through diverse, often conflicting, perspectives; and it involves inquiry into complex questions.

Some of the many ways in which Edgewood College students have engaged with the community through Human Issues include:

  1. Constructing oral histories for end-of-life hospice patients and their families
  2. Traveling to Guatemala to provide health care and education in impoverished areas
  3. Writing, producing, and performing an educational theatre production on global warming to elementary school audiences
  4. Volunteering at a diverse community center to help implement initiatives intended to reduce the achievement gap
  5. Sponsoring a campus-wide eco-olympics to raise environmental awareness among college students
