Service Learning in the Professional Programs
The business, education, and nursing majors stretch beyond common conceptions of
field experience to integrate community service into the professional learning
of students consistent with the institution’s mission. In partnership with
community agencies, faculty craft academic service learning experiences so
students achieve course learning outcomes while working to address real
community needs.
In the School of Business: 35 students in a Business Strategy class
worked with a community partner on consultation projects and implemented
business plans that assisted each organization in reaching a goal.
In the School of Nursing: Approximately 28 students staffed a community
center health clinic in a low income, ethnically diverse neighborhood.
In addition
to developing technical nursing skills, students practice cultural competency and
gained insight into providing culturally relevant health care.
In the School of Education: Students worked in several mentoring programs to support community partner initiatives to alleviate the achievement gap and provide college access opportunities to individuals with developmental disabilities.
