History Concentration with Teaching Minor Requirements

(Administered by the History Department) The major is part of a program leading to a Wisconsin initial educator license to teach Social Studies and History at the early adolescence through adolescence level (ages 10-21). Students complete an interdisciplinary major of 58-60 credits with 46-48 in history and 12 in the social sciences distributed as follows:

I. FOUNDATIONS OF COMMUNICATION

ENG 110 College Writing
MATH 101, 111, 112, 122 or 231 (caution: some majors have specific math requirements)
COMMS 101 Speech
PHIL 101 Logic: Critical Thinking
Computer Competency (determined by major)
Foreign Language (a two semester sequence is required)

For a B.S., at least 6 credits in one language; for a B.A., 16 credits in one language, or 14 credits in one and 8 in a second. High school coursework may fulfill the requirement, but credit is not given unless the student wishes to earn retroactive credit; see the college catalogue for policies.

II. FOUNDATIONS OF HUMAN LEARNING

An F1 course in literature (Pre-req is ENG 110 College Writing)
An F2 course in history and appreciation of one of the fine arts
An F3 studio experience course in one of the fine arts
An F4 course in social science: PS 262F4
An F5 sequence of two courses in one of the natural sciences, including experimental lab: NATS 106/107 rec.
An F6 course in history: HIST 115, 131, 132, 111
An F7 course in philosophy other than PHIL 101 (Pre-req is PHIL 101 Logic): ED 271 rec.
An F8 course in religious studies

III. HUMAN ISSUES STUDY

Human Issues Seminar (3-4 credits) or
Independent study on a Human Issues topic of the student’s choosing (min. 3 credits)

IV. MAJOR DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

The required courses in history are:
- HIST 115 F6 plus one elective from Area A in History (see HISTORY)
- HIST 131F6 and HIST 132F6 plus one elective from Area B in HISTORY (12 cr)
- HIST 111F6 plus one elective from Area C in HISTORY
- HIST 295 Pro-Seminar
- HIST 400/401 A, B, or C Selected Issues/Research Paper
- 6-8 credits in electives from any department that offers a “history of” course, e.g. history of religion; history of music; history of art, etc., or HIST 120F6 World Civilization and one 3 or 4 credit course in any department that offers a “history of” course.
- Twelve social science credits to include 4 in economics and eight in either sociology, psychology, anthropology or other department approved social science courses. Consult with an advisor.
- Post-bacs must complete a 12 credit residency requirement with the History Department. Consult with an advisor.
Completion of the Education professional requirements and the licensing requirements for teacher education (See EDUCATION). A Broad Fields Social Studies - History Major with a teaching minor must be admitted to teacher education before being admitted to HIST 459H; admission to teacher education is recommended as early as possible.
To o meet Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction licensing requirements, students should take coursework in conservation of natural resources and marketing and consumer cooperatives, GEOG 265 Environmental Conservation. Students are advised to check carefully the certification requirements of the state in which they plan to teach.
Majors must be adept at using a word processing program. They must also be familiar with computer-accessed historical sources. Instruction in researching such sources is begun in HIST 295, and continued in upper-division courses. Majors demonstrate proficiency in HIST 401..
At least half of the credits in history should be at the 200-level or above. Post-baccalaureate and undergraduate students must earn at least 12 credits in history at Edgewood College.
A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 is required in history and social science courses offered toward the major with at least a 3.5 in the senior seminar.

Also Required: A minimum of 120 credits & a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0. Some majors may require more credits and a higher GPA for completion of the degree.
