The principal, Karen Seno, says she hired Anne based on her resume and recommendations, not because she is a minority. However, Karen also says that race matters and that “it has s powerful effect in the classroom… The fact that I was able to hire a top notch person of color pleases me.”

After graduating from Edgewood College, Anne student-taught at O’Keefe Middle School and Shorewood Hills Elementary School. She then took a job teaching summer school with the Madison Metropolitan School District. Anne did not think she would be able to get a full-time position in Madison and planned to substitute teach so she could stay in the area. She also didn’t view her ethnicity as a tool to open doors.

Last fall, the district held a reception for new minority teachers. The purpose of the reception was to create an opportunity for the teachers to make connections to other teachers and organizations that support them. Anne said she planned to attend, but noted that there wasn’t such a reception planned for other new teachers. (June 2004)
