Welcome to News Briefs

July 18, 2008

Welcome Edgewood College Alumni,

Class of '68 at June Reunion Summer is in full swing at the College and one might think that things would slow down here, but quite the contrary. In June we hosted two reunions on campus (stories below) along with the 10th Biennial Colloquium of Dominican Colleges and Universities. The campus has welcomed many of the incoming freshmen of 2008 with registration days and we are currently hosting Private College Week with 10 “open house” sessions all week.

I am proud to tell you that the freshmen class is full for the 2008/2009 school year and we are very excited about the caliber of our incoming students. August 23rd will be move in day for the class and we are excited to welcome many new families and faces. If this is a day that you can spare an hour or two and welcome our newest students, we would love to have you on campus. Just call or email me and I will make sure your talents are put to good use.

On July 14th, we participated in and hosted “Tee up for Nursing” to raise money for our nursing scholarships. We had a fabulous turn out for a perfect day of golf and successfully raised more money than ever before on this event. All money raised is utilized for nursing scholarships.

There are many successes to be excited about at your alma mater! Please keep in touch and enjoy the news.

Warm regards,

Kathy O’Connor, Alumni Director

Dominican Young Adults Dominican Young Adults USA!
During the weekend of June 19-22, nineteen young adults and five other members of the Dominican Family gathered in Madison, WI on the campus of Edgewood College to continue discussion of the newest entity of the Dominican Family here in the United States Dominican Young Adults USA. The students heard about a group of villagers in El Salvador, who had been displaced from their homes, and voted to both raise awareness about the injustices being committed, as well as assist in raising money to help the villagers build a church for their community.
Before ending the day, the gathered participants were asked to consider making a formal commitment to this new entity. Each young adult was given a statement describing the responsibilities they would assume as members of this new organization. They decided on the establishment of a governing board where each position would be responsible for different aspects of the organization but decision making would be shared by all.
After the structure was established the following young adults from Edgewood College were elected; President - Kevin Sullivan, Edgewood College alumni; and Executive VP - Kate Craig, a current student at Edgewood College. With the help of their website www.dya-usa.org and their group on facebook (Dominican Young Adults USA) the hope is to invite other young adults who are Dominican by their formation in Dominican High Schools, Colleges, Universities, parishes and other Dominican experiences to join their organization and continue their connection with the Order.

Faculty/Staff

Dr. Joe Dr. Joe Retiring
On Thursday, May 8, the Faculty and Staff received a very heartfelt message from Dr. Joe Schmiedicke announcing his plans to retire as Dean of the School of Education effective June 30, 2009. His dedication to Edgewood College goes back to 1963 when the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa hired him. His intent is to provide a smooth and graceful transition in the deanship, guidance to the governance study now underway, and an opportunity for the College to begin a search for a new dean. His impact on many of the alumni of the College is invaluable and the search committee will be greatly challenged to fill the shoes of such an incredible legacy. More information will follow.

Purpose of Life
Professor Denis Collins, School of Business, recently shared the following with the faculty and staff at Edgewood College and we felt it certainly merited sharing with all of you.
Students in my RAAD "Social Responsibility in Business Class" are required to write an 8-12 page "Purpose of Life" essay that addresses specific issues. Unprompted, Thomas Mueller, toward the end of his paper, wrote eloquently about Dominican Values/Ethics in the RAAD program. Tom was overjoyed to be told that I wanted to share this paragraph with Edgewood College Administrators, the Dominican Sisters, and the Business School faculty. Enjoy!
"Admittedly, my comprehension of compassion and my ability to use it to make the world a better place is still in its infancy. Most of what I know about compassion and ethics is a result of the courses I've taken at Edgewood College. Looking back on my years in the RAAD business program, I can see that I've benefitted greatly from the Dominican educational tradition of study, reflection, and action. Several students I've talked to share the same sentiment I have, which is that somehow, we all find ourselves thinking more about ethics and more ethically even though we're not always aware of it. The realization comes later when we have time to reflect on the situations we've encountered and the decisions we've made. In some subtle way our thinking about the world and each other has changed for the better. Rather than being lectured to about ethics, the Edgewood program has figured out how to make it part of our thinking process."
- Thomas C. Mueller, RAAD Student, June 2008

Engaged Fellows Faculty Learning Community Initiative
Edgewood College announced the faculty members selected for the 2008-09 Engaged Fellows Faculty Learning Community Initiative, made possible by a grant from the President's Special Initiatives Fund and the Westerman Foundation. The participants are as follows:
Maribeth Bathum (Nursing), Lauren Lacey (English), Vince Kavaloski (Philosophy), Huining Ouyang (English), Cynthia Perry (Education), Bill Tooman (Religious Studies)
We are excited by the depth of experience, the commitment to teaching, and the multiple perspectives represented by these faculty members. Each participant will engage in a year-long Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) project exploring some aspect of their teaching practice in relation to multicultural, diversity, and social justice themes.
