Remembrance Ceremony - Dying to Cross

Event date: 11/5/2013 6:30 AM - 8:30 PM Export event

On Tuesday, November 5, a Remembrance Ceremony will be held outside Predolin Hall at 6:30 p.m. A screening of the film “The Undocumented” follows at 7:00 p.m., in Anderson Auditorium.

The ceremony and film are part of ‘Dying to Cross,’  a visual tribute on the Edgewood College campus commemorating the men and women who died in pursuit of their American Dream. It commemorates those who fell victim in the past year in the Sonoran Desert in their effort to cross the United States-Mexico border.

For the second consecutive year, students on campus, many of who participate in AL@S, the Association of Latino and Latina Students, are marking the tribute by placing crosses in the ground throughout campus. The crosses bear the names and ages of those who died. One hundred and twenty-six crosses are displayed on campus, and will remain through November 9.

The driving force behind ‘Dying to Cross’ is Ariana Silva, a senior double-majoring in Spanish and in Latin American Studies, and a native of Madison. “The project is not a political statement,” she said. “Our intention with Dying to Cross is to encourage reflection in regard to immigration. So often we look at immigration as a partisan issue, however if we are going to make some sort of change, we must look at immigration for what it fundamentally is, which is a human issue. These are men and women who are dying in their attempt at a better life.”
