Chancellor, University of Wisconsin-Platteville
Dennis J. Shields serves as the chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, the fastest growing university in the University of Wisconsin System. During the three years of Chancellor Shields’ leadership, the university has developed and begun executing a strategic plan that focuses on academic excellence and experiential learning, including undergraduate applied research and academic programs that encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation while cultivating the development of an entrepreneurial spirit.
The university completed a master planning process two years ago and Chancellor Shields has led the start of the execution of that plan. A new residence hall has been designed, developed and built, with a second hall due for completion in August 2013. The two halls have added over 1,000 beds to the capacity for student housing. Both halls were built utilizing a public/private partnership new to the university. Chancellor Shields is leading a transformative, comprehensive capital campaign that is designed to support the university for decades to come.
Chancellor Shields earned his undergraduate degree in business administration from Graceland College and his Juris Doctor from the University Of Iowa College Of Law. Prior to this, he served as acting vice president of student affairs at the City College of New York – City University of New York. In addition, he has held administrative positions at the Phoenix School of Law, Duke University School of Law, the University of Michigan Law School and the University of Iowa.
