Job Description:
Peer Academic Advisor There are two, paid Peer Academic
Advising positions available for the 2010-2011 academic year, with
an opportunity to become a Senior Peer Advisor. The position is designed
to assist the professional advisors in their work with first year students
as well as provide an experiential learning experience in high education
in an academic advisory capacity. This position may also be an internship
opportunity for college credit. Arrangements for the internship are
made through the appropriate academic department.

Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Meet with a caseload of first-year students throughout their
first 2 semesters at Edgewood to discuss course selection,
academic progress and academic planning both in group and one-on-one settings
- Facilitate referrals to appropriate campus resources
- Maintain accurate records
- Prepare and manage student files
- Assist freshman in using online academic advising and campus resources
- Meet on regular basis with other Academic Peer Advisors and a
professional advisor to facilitate the experiential learning
process and explore the following topics:
- Academic advising essentials (EC curriculum, administrative processes, FERPA, campus resources, etc.)
- Student Development
- Structured interview techniques
- Understanding group process and leading groups effectively
- Making referrals
Skills Needed:
- Strong verbal communication skills with an emphasis on interpersonal communication
- Minimum of a two semester commitment (more is preferred)
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Reasonably flexible schedule
- Availability to work up to 10 hours a week
- Preferred availability to assist with freshman registration over the summer (8 days)
