Introduction

The College strives to preserve for all of its students an environment that is conducive to academic pursuit, social growth, and individual discipline. Students are expected to behave in a moral and ethical manner. It is essential that mutual respect for, and sensitivity to, the needs of others be accepted by all members of the College community in accordance with the Dominican and Christian ideals of Edgewood College.

Responsibilities of Users

The campus computers and network provide access to information on and off campus along with communication with others worldwide via the Internet. Such benefit does require computer users to act in a responsible manner and to respect the rights of other users. Edgewood College views the use of computer facilities as a privilege, not a right, and seeks to protect legitimate computer users by imposing sanctions on those that abuse the privilege.

General

It is every student’s responsibility to:

• use computers on campus for educational and academic purposes, uphold the spirit of academic integrity in all electronic transactions, comply with the College policy on Academic Honesty (see Student Handbook), and be aware that electronic communications are neither private nor secure.
• Because of the limitations of our system, students are not permitted to
• create a World Wide Web page or subscribe to mailing lists.

Mechanical

• Leave equipment in the same configuration as it is found.
• Equipment is not to be moved.
• Use public printers for single copies, not for mass printing.
• Any users wishing to have multiple copies of a document should use a copy machine.
• Computers must be used for college-related or occupational-search purposes.
• Using computers for profit-making activities such as running a word processing service is not permitted.
• Files and printouts are the property of their author.
• Changing, moving, or examining them without the author’s permission is not permitted.
• Have all installations of hardware, software, and files approved by the Computer and Information Systems (CIS) Department prior to loading.
• Load only approved software on any campus computer.

Policy Violations

Students are expected to use electronic communications responsibly, and to behave in a moral and ethical manner. Abuse of electronic privileges will result in disciplinary action. Misconduct which is subject to disciplinary action includes, but is not limited to, the following:

• unauthorized use of another individual’s account,
• performing an act that will interfere with the normal operation of computers,
• peripherals or networks on campus,
• installing unauthorized software on any computer system on campus,
• offensive communication,
• offensive graphics,
• harassment,
• creating or distributing chain letters,
• impersonation that is to misrepresent yourself as another individual,
• use of campus computer equipment for creating products or services for sale,
• sharing or posting of passwords, and
• violating policies established in the Edgewood College Student Handbook.

Complaint and Resolution Procedure

Students who have questions or concerns regarding electronic use or the electronic use policy should contact Computer and Information Services or the Dean of Students’ Office.

Students are expected to report any known violations of the Electronic Use Policy to Computer and Information Services or to the Dean of Students’ Office.

Students who are found to be in violation of the Electronic Use Policy will be subject to disciplinary action, which could include temporary or permanent curtailment of computer privileges or access; disciplinary probation, suspension, or expulsion.

If sufficient evidence exists to indicate that the account is being abused Edgewood College reserves the right to search an account or change a password.
