Madison, Wis. (October 16, 2013) – Edgewood College has a tough assignment, and the right partners to complete it. Beginning the week of October 21, a small herd of goats will assist the Landscape and Grounds Department in clearing invasive plant species along the shore of Lake Wingra.
The College is working with The Green Goats, a relatively new company that has local ties to the Madison area.
The Green Goats employs an electric mesh fence that will contain the goats in the area they are clearing. The goats will feed on invasive shrubs like European Buckthorn and Honeysuckle throughout the day, and rest at night along the shore.
The herd is expected to remain on campus for 10-14 days.
A commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability resonates deeply at the College, a legacy begun by the native people who first cared for this very special fifty-five acre campus on the shore of Lake Wingra. The College is honored to be part of the legacy of sustainability that we inherit. We look forward to the success of this innovative approach.
