Edgewood College to graduate 243 on May 15
Appellate Judge Paul B. Higginbotham will address
commencement
Madison, Wis. (April 25, 2005) – An estimated 243
undergraduate and graduate students will receive their
degrees at Edgewood College’s 2005 spring commencement, to
be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 15 in the Veterans
Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center. These will
be the first Edgewood College degrees conferred by President
Daniel J. Carey, who will be formally inaugurated on Friday,
April 29. The speaker will be Wisconsin Court of Appeals
Judge Paul B. Higginbotham (see profile below).

About Judge Paul B. Higginbotham
Appointed to the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, District IV
in 2003, Judge Paul B. Higginbotham was recently elected to
the post for a six-year term. He began his judicial career
as the City of Madison’s first municipal judge in 1992. In
1994 he was elected as Dane County Circuit Court Judge. He
sat in that court for nine years. He was the first
African-American elected to a judicial seat in Dane County.
He also became the first person of color to sit on any
appellate court in the state’s history. He served as Acting
Director of the Madison Equal Opportunities Commission from
1993-94 and as an executive aide to the Dane County
Executive from 1988-92. He received his BA from the
UW-Madison and a law degree from the UW law school in 1985.
He practiced law until 1988 as a trial attorney. He has been
an adjunct professor at the UW law school and has served on
numerous state bar committees, community boards, and
organizations. He is married to Cora Higginbotham. They have
two children: Paul Jr. and Julian.
