Daniel Carey inaugurated as Edgewood
College’s 11th president
Madison, Wis. (April 29, 2005) -- The inauguration of Daniel Carey as the
11th president of Edgewood College was front-page news in
the Wisconsin State Journal and was featured prominently on
local television and radio. Here are some excerpts and links
to stories with quotes from students, faculty, and staff:
New Edgewood College leader making his mark
By Karen Rivedal, Wisconsin State Journal, April 29,
2005, page A1
After eight months on the job, Daniel Carey’s big
moment comes today when he is officially inaugurated as
Edgewood College’s 11th president.
It’ll be a daylong, swanky affair with solemn rites,
robed delegates and speeches by state and local
notables, including Mayor Dave Cieslewicz.
Bishop Robert Morlino will celebrate the morning
Mass, followed by an afternoon installation ceremony and
a band concert in the evening.
But you get the feeling that Carey, 59, originally
from Iowa, is more focused on the little moments these
days.
A former president of a similar, but smaller, college
in Kansas, he’s been on the job long enough to know how
tough it will be but not so long that he doesn’t still
radiate enthusiasm when he talks about it.
And he is at his most animated - leaning forward in
his chair, talking with his hands - when he mentions two
things: students and the future of Edgewood College….
Edgewood junior Allison Gerland, president of the
student government, said she thought Carey was “very
open” and would be a good partner in achieving student
goals…..
“His leadership style is to hit the ground running,”
[business professor Moses] Altsech said. “He didn’t take
a whole lot of time before he started making decisions.
He’s about cutting through the red tape to get things
done. That’s a great approach. That’s exactly what we
need right now….”
“This has been a year of ‘getting to know you,’” said
professor Mary Kelly-Powell, who leads the nursing
department. “It’s really difficult to say how things
will settle out. But my experience is that he’s very
open. He invites conversation. He seems to be listening
and paying attention to the culture of the
organization….”

New Edgewood chief vows to listen, lead

Daniel J. Carey was installed as the 11th president
of Edgewood College on Friday, pledging to “strengthen
the culture of service that is at the heart of our
mission.”
“I pledge to you my best energy, effort, conviction
and action,” Carey said. “I pledge to listen, to learn
and to lead….”
Maggie Hopkins, Edgewood’s director of mission,
called the day “a time of reflection.”
“His entrance into the community has been so natural
and easy,” Hopkins said. “It’s a natural match.”
