Edgewood grads span globe 26 of the 243 getting degrees are
from other countries
Wisconsin State Journal, May 16, 2005, front page of
local section
By Jason Stein
Graduates at Edgewood College’s commencement each
made some kind of journey to earn their diploma. But
Fahad Syed of Karachi, Pakistan, traveled farther than
most.
Syed was one of 26 international graduates from 12
countries who received a degree Sunday at the Alliant
Center -- more than one-tenth of the 243 people getting
Edgewood degrees in 2005 and the largest contingent in
the history of the Dominican Catholic school.
Syed, who earned a master’s degree in business
administration, said he hopes to work in this country.
“It’s been a great, a wonderful experience.…”
Edgewood graduate Nick LeNoble sees a value in having
foreign students on campus. “You get to see their work
ethic and you get new angles on a lot of material,” said
LeNoble, 22, who said the presence of an Indonesian
student enriched one of his classes on international
marketing….
International students are often highly motivated
people who end up staying here and contributing to the
U.S. economy in fields such as science and technology,
[Larry] Laffrey [director of study abroad and
international student services at Edgewood] said. “We
get individuals who have really kind of risen to the top
in their own system.”
Eric Bachtiar of Jakarta, Indonesia, graduated Sunday
with a degree in computer science. The 23-year-old grad
said he most appreciated the “open-mindedness and
freedom” in the U.S….

Be yourself, graduates told Higginbotham keynotes
Edgewood commencement
The Capital Times, May 16, 2005, front page
By Samara Kalk Derby
Paul Higginbotham almost became a priest instead of a
judge, he told an audience of Edgewood College
graduates, their friends and families Sunday during the
college’s commencement ceremony at the Alliant Energy
Center….
“Now I have a job where I wear a black coat, people
rise when I walk in, people confess their sins to me,
and some folks even fall asleep in the courtroom. So
maybe I’m not too far from my original calling,” he
said….
He told an anecdote about how his wife, Cora, asked a
group of first-graders what they wanted to be when they
grew up. One girl said she wanted to be a doctor,
another said she wanted to be a mom. Their own son said
he wanted to be a lawyer.
A fourth child hesitated and then answered seriously,
“I want to be myself.”
Higginbotham then implored graduates to be
themselves. “Find your soul’s purpose and live it with
intention.”
Student speaker Colleen Hartung, who was receiving a
master’s degree in religious studies, reminded fellow
graduates that their time spent at Edgewood came on the
cusp of a new millennium and in the shadow of Sept. 11,
2001.
“In a very real way, we lived in a world on the edge
- the edge of discovery and the edge of disaster,” she
said, playing on the college’s name.
Katie Friedel, undergraduate student speaker and
student government president, was graduating with an
English degree. She told graduates to take the five
values instilled at Edgewood into the world -- truth,
compassion, justice, partnership and community -- and
“live them out every day” of their lives….
Chris Toutant, graduating with a business degree in
marketing and management, said he would like to stay in
the Madison area….
Sara Myers, graduating with the same degree, will
become a manager at Tan World …. Her new position means
a considerable raise, Myers said….

WMTV-NBC15, May 15, 2005
Madison’s Edgewood College ushers another group of
grads into the workforce…
Graduates say they’ve enjoyed the educational
experience, adding now they’re ready to put their
studies to work. “It’s excitement, it’s a new start.
It’s just a wonderful feeling to be finished and moving
forward,” says Anne Palzkill, M.A. Educational
