Edgewood College celebrates grand opening at Deming Way
|
MADISON, Wis. (Sept. 7, 2005) – Tuesday
officially marked the beginning of a new era in adult
education at Edgewood College with the celebration, grand
opening and dedication of its Deming Way campus building on
Madison’s west side.
“In many ways this is an historic crossroads for Edgewood
College,” said college president Daniel J. Carey. “For the
first time in our history we have added a satellite campus
as a natural extension of our mission and vision for
Edgewood as we continue to place student learning at the
center of all that we do.”
Edgewood College received the building,
located at 1255 Deming Way, in 2004 as a gift in kind from
trustee Diane Ballweg, class of ’74, her husband Ken Ballweg,
and Eric and Sara Schwartz.
“This place is more than a building,” said Diane Ballweg.
“It is an open door where there was a closed door. It is a
place where people can be developed and people can develop
relationships, and it is a place with heart, because it
belongs to Edgewood College.” |

Currently, two adult accelerated degree programs are being
offered at the Deming Way campus – the Bachelor of Business
Administration (BBA) and a Bachelor degree in Computer
Information Systems (CIS). The relocation of the accelerated
programs offers additional classroom space which has allowed
the BBA program to more than double in enrollment since it
was initially offered in 2002, while the newly added CIS
program got off the ground with its first class on Aug. 29,
2005.
The Deming Way site is also home of the college’s Corporate
Learning Center (CLC). With funding from the Oscar Rennebohm
Foundation, the CLC provides small and mid-sized companies
direct access to college faculty and addresses specific
needs of each individual organization. In addition, a number
of seminars are already planned for 2005-06 appropriately
titled “The Management Enrichment Series” aimed at teaching
effective managerial skills to professionals in the
workplace.
“This gift was marvelous in many respects,” said Steve
Mixtacki, chairman of the board of trustees. “Just walking
around the building you can see that this is going to be an
incredible facility for adult learning.”
Edgewood College has dedicated vital resources to the Deming
Way campus to ensure students receive the same personable,
quality education that is expected from Edgewood. These
resources include the relocation of several faculty and
administrative staff, improvements in technology, and
facility renovations. The site boasts a high-level corporate
environment, with comfortable chairs and tables and easily
reconfigurable classrooms. Rooms are furnished with
state-of-the-art technology and students are able to go
wireless with their own laptops. Students can reserve
conference rooms for group projects or work in an open,
loft-style study space.
Much has already been done to utilize the acquired building
and improve student learning, and Ballweg challenged
Edgewood College to continue to raise the bar of excellence
and continue to exemplify what is means to be a
“values-based educational institution.”
“We are in the process of updating our strategic plan to
include our strategies for maximizing the use of this
wonderful space,” said Carey, who on behalf of the college,
also expressed his appreciation to the Ballweg and Schwartz
families for their generous gift. “Today marks the beginning
of our era of reaching out more broadly to Madison and the
region."
