Edgewood College plans to add track to athletic offerings

MADISON, Wis. (Sept. 9, 2005) – Edgewood College has announced plans to add men’s and women’s track to its varsity athletic offerings, with NCAA Division III competition beginning as early as January 2006. The addition of track brings the number of intercollegiate programs at the college to 14, an all-time high.

“The addition of track for women and men creates more opportunities for intercollegiate competition for student athletes at Edgewood College,” said athletic director G. Steven Larson. “It is the next natural step for the intercollegiate athletic department to meet the recent growth in our enrollment and the impending change in our conference affiliation. Our goal is to start modestly and move forward with this program over the course of the next few years.”

“I am thrilled by the decision for Edgewood College to add track to its athletic offerings,” said Brewster. “I have heard a lot of positive feedback from students regarding the announcement. Those involved in track at Edgewood this year will be part of making athletic history here.”

According to Brewster, the team will look to participate in perhaps one indoor meet this January, but the focus will be on outdoor meets this spring. Although no formal plans have been announced regarding the addition of field events, it is likely for future consideration.

Outdoor track has been an NCAA Division III championship sport since 1974 and currently has over 250 sponsoring institutions nationwide. For more information on Edgewood College athletics, please visit www.EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com
