Student Resource Center prepares today’s student for tomorrow
MADISON, WI (Sept. 29, 2005) - There are many pressures the typical
college student has to face on a day-to-day basis, including
juggling full-time credit loads, preparing for class
projects or exams, and deciding what to do after graduation.
Edgewood College students get help doing these things and
more from a staff of dedicated people who specialize in
preparing them to deal with these life issues.
In addition to providing Edgewood students with career
services, personal counseling, learning support, and
academic advising, the Student Resource Center (located in
DeRicci Hall, room 206) has an
ambitious lineup of events and workshops this semester
designed to help students improve their study skills and
prepare for real-world experiences.
“Part of the mission of the Student Resource Center is to
look at the educational needs of the whole person,” said SRC
office coordinator Kasey DeWitt. “Some of this is practical
stuff geared toward freshmen and sophomores who need to
learn this material now. For the juniors and seniors, we
offer things that would assist them when they leave
Edgewood. We can guide students in many areas.” |

Workshop topics range from “Conquer your
Math Anxiety” to the always popular “How to be an Effective
Note Taker.” “Crisis Management vs. Time Management”
is next up in the series and will take place on Tuesday,
Oct. 4. There are also workshops that focus on test-taking
and public speaking, and even one on punctuality (or lack
thereof), appropriately titled “Perfectly Late: Dealing with
Procrastination.”
“I have used what I learned to set realistic time
expectations for myself, and I also found out that I learn
best by doing readings and not from lectures alone,” said
Bill Dougherty, a senior English Writing major who first
learned about the SRC’s services in his Freshman Forum
class. Last year, Dougherty also attended resume-building
and leadership marketing workshops.
“From those two workshops I learned how to write an
effective cover letter and resume, as well as figuring out
what skills I have gained from leadership positions that
makes me a better candidate to employers,” said Dougherty.
“I think the workshops helped me realize that leadership
positions are great for more than just meeting people and
having fun; they can lead to career options.”
Junior Olga Martinez has utilized the knowledge of the
trained SRC staff for learning support, and has also
attended many workshops and events. Last year, Olga
participated in mock interviews, for which area
professionals come to campus and conduct realistic job
interviews in a style and setting consistent with what is
expected in the business world. Afterwards, students receive
feedback on their performance and tips on how make a
positive first impression on a potential employer. Mock
interviews are offered again this fall from November 15-18.
“I think attending workshops has put me into contact with
other students looking for the same types of help and the
same resources as I am,” said Martinez. “I think they are a
great resource.”
SRC also sponsors other events not necessarily designed for
classroom applications. For example, more than 60 people
attended the Sept. 22 Etiquette Dinner aimed at teaching
soon-to-be college grads the “finer” techniques of fine
dining. Meanwhile, “Spa Day” offers students a free massage
by licensed massage therapists to help ease some of the
tensions of finals week.
If you are a student in need of one of the Student Resource
Center’s many services or simply have a question or comment
for the center, please call the SRC at (608) 663-2281.
