National Recognition for Edgewood College Student Newspaper
|
MADISON, WI – (Nov. 8, 2005) A national
organization of collegiate newspapers has recognized three
Edgewood College student journalists for excellence in its
annual contest. Reporters Brianna
Donovan ’05 and Patricia Israel ‘05 won third prize in the
Associated Collegiate Press News Story of the Year contest
for 2005. Katjusa Cisar ’07 won an honorable mention in
the Editorial of the Year contest. Their work was published
in Edgewood College’s student newspaper, On The Edge.
More than 250 college and university
newspapers were entered in this year's competition. On The
Edge was the only student newspaper in the nation to have
two winners in the writing categories. Results were
announced at the yearly convention of the Associated College
Press, the country's oldest and largest association of
student media, in Kansas City, MO.
|
This is the first time On The Edge has
entered this national contest. Writers and reporters from
colleges and universities of all sizes, public and private,
are eligible for the annual awards. Many of the
schools have large journalism programs with daily
newspapers. Among the schools represented are private
universities such as Harvard, Yale, Duke, and Columbia, and
large state universities such as Iowa, Illinois, UCLA, and
Penn State.
These awards are the latest in a series
earned by Edgewood College student journalists. Earlier this
year, Teresa Dunlap ’05 was awarded first-prize in general
reporting by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association. In 2004,
Brendan O’Brien (’04?) was recognized by the Wisconsin
Newspaper Association for his Sports Writing, and for
General Column Writing. On The Edge earned third prize in
Overall Excellence in 2000 in a “Best of the Midwest”
competition sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press.
Edgewood College professor Jack Vitek serves as faculty
advisor to On The Edge, which is published every three weeks
during the academic year.
