Admission to the Nursing Program

Our nursing program provides students with many hands-on opportunities to practice and to gain feedback from professors throughout the program. If you have additional questions after reviewing the following information feel free to contact the Admissions Office at 608-663-2294 or admissions@edgewood.edu.

Nursing Enrollment Update (September 2008):
The School of Nursing is able to admit 42 students per semester into the Nursing program. The next point at which space may be available to enter the Nursing Department is Fall 2009. Students who wish to enroll in the Nursing program during the Fall 2009 semester are advised to apply for admission to the College as soon as possible. Please be advised that admission to the College does not imply nor guarantee admission to the Nursing program at any point in time.

Nursing Admission Process
Transfer students who have completed all of their prerequisites must apply for full admission to the Nursing program the semester before they are eligible to begin nursing studies. The application deadlines are:

February 15 for the Fall Semester
August 1 for the Spring Semester

Applications for the Nursing program are available in the School of Nursing or online at http://nursing.edgewood.edu/. Admission to the program is competitive; even students who meet the minimum requirements may not be admitted. Because of enrollment limits in the major, the School of Nursing may be unable to offer admission to all qualified students.

Admission to the nursing program is a two step process. Students are first admitted to Edgewood College and then, after completion of prerequisites, can apply for full admission to nursing. The Nursing Admissions Committee will review student records after applications are received. The committee will admit the most qualified students based on cumulative GPA, science/math GPA, previous academic records, credits completed at Edgewood College and the strength of the application essay. Students may later be disqualified from the program if their GPA drops below the required minimum in the semester before admission. Applicants who are not admitted may reapply in a subsequent semester or pursue a major in another field of study. Students who have applied in the past will be given no special consideration and their records will be reviewed as a member of the current applicant pool. Individuals who reapply must be currently enrolled at Edgewood College.

Nursing Prerequisites
Required prior to beginning the nursing program, but are not required for general admission to the college:

Students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 in all previous undergraduate college work. In addition, students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 in all required science and math courses, with no grade less than “C”.  All students who are admitted to the Nursing program must have successfully completed a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course and have passed the certification examination. Students must have completed the course within the past 2 years or have recent experience as a CNA.

Transferability of Your Previous Credits
Quite a number of students transfer to Edgewood each semester and we would love to have you join our campus. For admission to the college transfer candidates must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in a minimum of 12 academic credits from a regionally accredited college/university. Our credit transfer policy will allow courses with at least a grade of 'C-' or higher to transfer. Edgewood will transfer associate and college level courses only, depending on how closely the course content resembles Edgewood courses. An official evaluation of transfer course work will be sent to students upon admission to Edgewood. If you are interested in obtaining a preliminary unofficial credit evaluation prior to applying please contact the Office of Admissions.

Please note that required science and math courses must have been taken within five years of admission to the Nursing Program, unless they were part of a degree earned within the past five years.
