On the shore of Lake Wingra is Edgewood College's first independent facility, the Mazzuchelli
Biological Station, built in 1957, before lakefront development was
prohibited, to take advantage of access to one of the three lakes in
Madison. As its name implies, the building is home to biological
laboratories and its location is ideal for environmental studies. A pier extends out
through the marsh into the lake, allowing easy sampling and observations. Mazzuchelli's
biology labs are used almost exclusively for research and experimentation, as well as serving
as the home and training center for the Yahara Watershed Network, a collaborative project between
Edgewood College, and area high schools and grade schools, plus agencies such as the Department
of Natural Resources, the UW-Arboretum, and others concerned with water, air, and land resources.
