Director of Health Services

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:   

Provide leadership in the delivery of comprehensive, culturally-sensitive health and wellness services for the Edgewood College community, including diagnosis and treatment of acute minor illness and stable chronic illness. Provide consultation, collaboration and referral for health-related illness and offer education and programs which promote wellness.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Direct Service

  • Provide health assessment, health histories and perform physical examinations
  •  Provide health care that is evidence-based, incorporates current nationally recognized practice guidelines, and is relevant to the unique needs of the college health population
  • Manage acute illness and injuries
  • Manage stable chronic health problems
  • Screen for health concerns that need physician and community referral
  • Prescribe and regulate selected medications and/or treatments including immunizations
  • Counsel in such areas as nutrition, mental health, weight control, eating disorders
  • Teach health principles and facts to clients
  • Perform travel health physicals and provide the appropriate education, vaccination and recommendations
  • Collect and maintain health records in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA requirements
  • Provide leadership for and work collaboratively with Student Development Staff to provide programming and support services that help to educate, aid in prevention, and create awareness on health topics relevant to diverse student populations

Leadership/ Administration/ Supervision

  • Establish relationship and maintain strong communication with a medical director as appropriate
  • Supervise health services staff including part-time medical assistants and N.P.
  • Provide support for the College’s pandemic response efforts to ensure coordination of the pandemic response plan revisions in conjunction with current best practices
  • Develop and monitor budget for Health Services and office operations
  • Update policy and procedure documents as appropriate
  • Conduct regular assessments and evaluation on student learning, programs and services
  • Collaborate with Residence Life, Personal Counseling Services and the Violence Prevention Team to offer programs for the prevention of sexual violence and promotion of healthy relationships
  • Initiate and maintain contacts with health professionals in the Madison community
  • Ensure cultural competence for all Health Services staff and foster an environment of inclusivity and respect to race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion and other identities
  • Maintain a channel of open communication with other campus health care providers regarding both individual and campus wide health issues and concerns (e.g. Personal Counseling Services, Sports Medicine- Athletics, and Dietitian).

Health and Wellness Programming

  • Serve as member of the Health/Wellness Cluster to work in collaboration with Personal Counseling to provide outreach education and opportunities that promote wellness through inclusive programs
  • Recruit, supervise and collaborate with Health and Wellness Intern
  • Provide education and training to Resident Assistants and other student groups on health-related issues
  • Assist those interested in smoking cessation and, as time permits, oversee educational programs on hazards of smoking and secondhand smoke
  • Disseminate inclusive health information to college community
  • Coordinate wellness programming and flu clinics with nursing faculty and students

Student Development Staff Membership/ Community Service

  • Serve as member of ”Edgewood College Cares Team” (behavioral intervention team)
  • Serve as a Student Development Staff member, e.g. attend Student Development Staff meetings, retreats, Orientations, Commencements and other staff and college functions as appropriate
  • Serve as member of the Academic Appeals Committee
  • Actively support missions of Edgewood College and Student Development Staff

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Necessary Education or Work Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Nursing from a NLN or CCNE accredited program
  • Nurse Practitioner certification required, preferably Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Adult Nurse Practitioner certified
  • Prescriptive authority in the State of Wisconsin, Federal DEA number & NPI Number
  • Licensed to practice in the State of Wisconsin
  • Minimum of 3 years of post-graduate clinical work
  • Work in campus health in a college or university setting strongly preferred

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Skilled in health assessment, diagnosis of common acute issues, treatment and immunizations
  • Experienced in mental health assessment and intervention
  • Demonstrated ability to create a trusting, supportive rapport with students
  • Ambulatory care experience
  • Multicultural Competence- the awareness, knowledge, and skills needed to work with others who are culturally different from self in meaningful, relevant, and productive ways.
  • Possesses knowledge and experience in providing services to those affected by relationship violence, sexual harassment, stalking and sexual assault
  •  Knowledge of current health issues, protocols and best practices
  • Demonstrated record of ethical practice
  • Skilled in use of electronic medical records and tools needed to communicate, present and research health issues.
  • Skilled in use of the Wisconsin Immunization Registry.

Required Technology Skills:

  • Overall Proficient skill-level in Microsoft Office, which includes: Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and basic computer concepts
  • Knowledge of SharePoint is a plus
  • Willingness and ability to learn new software
