Medical Administrative Assistant

DESCRIPTION OF JOB

Edgewood Health Services exists to enhance student learning by promoting health and well-being. The Medical Assistant contributes to this mission. The Medical Administrative Assistant performs administrative, clerical, and clinical duties which will support the efficient, effective and inclusive operation of the Health Center. This position is half-time for 10.5 months, and off June 15-August 1. Work hours are exclusively on weekdays between 8:00am and 4:30pm, two days per week, .375 FTE plus the occasional optional, additional hours.

Responsibilities:

Administrative:

  • Front desk reception
  • Answers phones and schedules appointments
  • Maintain medical and financial records
  • Manage staff calendars
  • Provide off-campus referrals for clients requiring specialized care
  • Takes lead role in administering student health insurance plan. Resolve questions from students and parents regarding health care and insurance concerns
  • Assist with development of brochures and workshop materials and updates and maintains Health Services Website
  • Assist director with monitoring office budget
  • Monitors compliance with state immunization laws
  • Manage all facets of patient records and billing to include: updating electronic medical record as needed, sending monthly statements to the student insurance vendor; and justifying monthly laboratory statements
  • Schedule semester fitness classes. Includes recruiting instructors, securing contracts, participant registration, room scheduling, payment processing and evaluation
  • Provide administrative and other support for wellness programming, training, and health & safety initiatives in partnership with the Nurse Practitioner
  • Order and stock medical supplies, prescription and over-the-counter drugs and vaccines in coordination with the Nurse Practitioner.
  • Order and stock administrative supplies
  • Compile reports as needed
  • Monitor distribution and collection of Student Health History Reports.
  • Maintain general appearance of the health center as an attractive, welcoming and inclusive space
  • Understand and comply with ethical, legal, regulatory and privacy/confidentiality concerns related to the Health Center

Clinical:

  • Measures and records vital signs
  • Records patient interview, history and chief complaint
  • Provide patient education with regards to medication, disease management, home treatments and special diets
  • Prepares patients for examinations and preforms routine screening tests
  • Assists provider with exams
  • Phlebotomy and collection of other lab specimens
  • Preforms basic lab tests
  • Prepares and administers medications/immunizations with provider authorizations
  • Changes dressings, applies bandages, removes sutures and other first aid procedures
  • Uses CPR skills when necessary
  • Performs OSHA safety standards
  • Performs accurate, legal, and ethical documentation at all times
  • Performs other position-related duties as assigned

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Necessary Education or Work Experience:

  • Strong computer skills which include but are not limited to Electronic Health Records, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Publisher, Excel, SharePoint and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work effectively in a busy, fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work productively with constant interruptions; i.e. ability to shift focus from administrative work to accommodating incoming visitors
  • Multicultural Competence – the awareness, knowledge, and skills needed to work with others who are culturally different from self in meaningful, relevant, and productive ways
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in a clear, courteous and tactful manner with diverse students, faculty and staff, as well as outside vendors or practitioners

  • Proven organizational and prioritization skills with strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to be a team player in a team-oriented environment
