Faculty Advisor Resources

Designed to use faculty exchange to strengthen the international partnerships Edgewood College has with another university, through collaboration on teaching, curriculum, pedagogy, and research. The call for this grant is only during the fall term. Applicants should choose one of these international partnerships: (For more information on each of these, contact Binbin Fu)

Past Placement Examples:

1. Masaryk University (MU) in Brno, Czech Republic (a broad range of disciplines available for faculty exchange).
2. Universidad Católica de Santa María (UCSM) in Arequipa, Peru (a broad range of disciplines available for faculty exchange)
3. Zhejiang Yuexiu University of Foreign Languages (ZYU) in Shaoxing, China (limited to faculty in the fields of Business, Communication Studies, English)

Required: The faculty member’s plan needs to be in concert with his/her department’s/school’s and Edgewood’s long-range international planning. By October each year, the Edgewood faculty member is required to meet with Binbin Fu to discuss details about the specific exchange sought: requirements, budget, and how the activity will strengthen the partnership. *Edgewood faculty should not contact another institution directly without first consulting with Binbin.

Expenses Cover: *Inquire to confirm what’s included.

• For UCSM and ZYU, the award will cover the faculty member’s airfare and ground transportation to the host university, plus health insurance—up to a set amount.
• For MU, these expenses will be covered by special funding Masaryk has obtained.
  *For all three exchanges, housing and food in-country will be covered by the host institution. The applicant will need funding from other sources to cover some expenses (i.e. passport, visa fees, personal travel, etc.)

The application should contain:

1. A description of the participants in the faculty exchange.
2. A description of the goals/objectives of the exchange.
3. Explanation of how the exchange enhances the global perspective of the following:
   • The Edgewood faculty member: how the exchange would bring a global perspective to her/his teaching
   • The particular Edgewood school/department: how the exchange fits into the school’s/department’s plans
   • Edgewood College: how the exchange fits into the College’s long-term international plans
4. Budget information: an itemization of the Edgewood faculty member’s expenses (e.g., airfare and ground transportation to the host university, and health insurance). Stipulate the amount to be covered by the grant and the amount/sources of supplemental funding identified by the applicant
5. Required: Approval by the applicant’s School Dean; for Arts and Sciences or the School of Integrative Studies, need approval by the Dean and the Department Chair/Program Director, emailed to Sara Liang at sliang@edgewood.edu. This ensures good communication.

Selection criteria for this award:

• Potential to develop a global perspective in the Edgewood faculty member’s teaching
• A well-conceived plan and the ability to carry it out (including the budget)
• Explanation of how this exchange will deepen/strengthen an existing international partnership
• Significant contribution to the internationalization of the curriculum and Edgewood College
• A complete application, including approval of the Dean/Chair/Director

Designed to give faculty opportunities for incorporating a global dimension into their teaching, these grants could support activities including, but not limited to, the following:

• International conferences or seminars
• Consultation with colleagues outside the U.S., to bring a global perspective to the classroom
• Exploration of a future faculty-led study abroad program or enhancement of a current one
• Language study
• Research to be conducted abroad

Typically each award will range from $1500 to $2500. *Funding from other sources will likely be needed to cover all expenses.

The application should contain:

1. Applicant’s information: name, title, dept/school, faculty status (full-time), previous international experience.
2. A description of the project, including a plan and timeline.
3. A description of how this project will enhance the faculty’s global knowledge, skills, experience and bring a global perspective into her/his teaching. And why the faculty member is interested in this opportunity at this time.
4. If developing a new study abroad program, include a statement as to how this fits into the department’s/school’s/and College’s plans (The applicant is required to meet with Sara Liang to discuss the fit with the College’s plans.)
5. An itemized budget (the amount of grant funding & the amount/sources of supplemental support).
6. Required: Approval by the applicant’s School Dean; for Arts and Sciences or the School of Integrative Studies, need approval by the Dean and the Department Chair/Program Director, emailed to Sara Liang at sliang@edgewood.edu. This ensures good communication.

Selection criteria for the awards are as follows:

• Potential to develop a global perspective in existing or new course(s).
• A well-conceived project and the ability to carry it out.
• Advancement of the faculty member’s global expertise.
• Advancement of Edgewood students’ global knowledge and/or experience.
• Significant contribution to the internationalization of the curriculum and Edgewood College.
• A complete application, including approval of the Dean/Chair/Director.

Designed to give faculty opportunities for incorporating a global dimension into their teaching, applicants should choose one of these specific conferences we recommend:

• Institute for Curriculum and Campus Internationalization 2018 May 20 – 23, 2018 at Indiana University in Bloomington For details (about 2017, to get an idea of 2018).
• The Intercultural Communication Institute Winter Institute for Intercultural Communication (WIIC); March 13-16, 2018 (Edgewood spring break dates), Springfield, Mass. Or Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication (SIIC); Portland, Oregon. Attend a 3-day workshop on varying dates between July 11-27, 2018. Details on WIIC and SIIC will be announced soon; see 2017 offerings, to get an idea.
• Or another conference on global pedagogy (applicant should first consult with Binbin Fu)

Typically each award will range from $750 to $1500. *Note: Funding from other sources will likely be needed to cover all expenses.

1. Applicant’s information: name, title, school, faculty status (full time); previous background in incorporating a global dimension into one’s teaching.
2. U.S. conference information: specify which conference faculty member wants to attend and why this conference was chosen; describe the faculty’s objectives for the conference and how it will enhance the person’s global pedagogy and enrich the teaching of new or existing course(s); state why the faculty member is interested in this opportunity at this time.
3. Budget information: an itemization of the conference expenses, with the amount to be covered by the grant and the amount/sources of supplemental funding.
4. Required: Approval by the applicant’s School Dean; for Arts and Sciences or the School of Integrative Studies, need approval by the Dean and the Department Chair/Program Director, emailed to Sara Liang at sliang@edgewood.edu. This ensures good communication.
