Mathematics

Mathematics plays a fundamental role in the evolution of human culture and in our ability to comprehend the universe. Mathematics holds keys to describing and analyzing complex phenomena. Indeed, it is the language of science, the voice of nature.

Beyond this, mathematics is a creative discipline in its own right. Mathematical reasoning is a deductive art. Mathematical truths, once proved, are timeless—as fresh and beautiful today as they were when Plato decreed on the entrance to his academy: Let no one ignorant of geometry enter here.

The study of mathematics is not only personally rewarding but can open doors to a wide variety of professional opportunities. Careers drawing on mathematical skills consistently rank highly in job satisfaction, salary levels and working conditions. In addition, mathematical study fosters rigorous and abstract thinking, effective communication of technical ideas and creative problem solving—capacities necessary for engaged and effective citizenship.

As a student of mathematics, you can expect to develop as a mathematician within a close-knit community that includes small classes and individual attention from faculty members.

The Dominicans say that each of us holds a piece of the truth. In our community of scholars, we foster an affirming, collegial atmosphere where we are empowered to explore and share that truth through mathematical explorations and insights. We invite you to join us on our journey.
