Ali Diamond is a freshman who has chosen to major in English with a concentration in journalism. Her passion for her major and future career is what influenced her decision to take the COR 1 class Caring and Gender, taught by Nursing professor Steve Rush. She explains: "Part of the college experience that I want is exploring all perspectives - that is what a journalist does." Learning a variety of perspectives around the course theme has helped break down gendered ideas of what it means to be caring. "I have discovered priorities in caring. A lot of the class involves exploring what caring means to us and the difference between men and women caring." Ali is excited to be able to take these learned lessons and apply them to her final project. "As part of the class we have to do observations of groups of people to see how caring differs between the two genders. We are specifically looking at groups of children aged 1 to 5. I am going to be going to a playground and observing children at play and how they behave. I am excited to take what I learn and apply it to a research paper."
Ali has enjoyed the class discussion and having the opportunity to contribute her thoughts and ideas in the class. She also appreciates that this class is just the start of her college experience. "Edgewood College is all about getting a liberal arts education. I am gaining a more worldly experience. It's nice to know that I am getting a broader view of what's out there."
