"The Edgewood community is one filled with love. It's filled with a true sense of compassion for others and an ability to make everyone feel welcome. The friendships made and acquaintances met at Edgewood are ones that will remain with you for a lifetime. The connections we made will become contacts we can call on when we're in need of a job reference, help composing a speech or when we just miss an old friend. Edgewood is not just a college community-it's a family. It's a family with many unique members who are all accepted with every quirk and eccentricity they have. Being a part of the Edgewood community means that you always have a home and someone to rely on. The value of what I have gained from attending Edgewood is immeasurable. I feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of the Edgewood community; a true family.
I challenge you to strive to build a community, wherever you go, like the one you've had the gift to be a part of at Edgewood. We know the value of a strong, diverse and welcoming community and we all have the knowledge of how to build one because of the exemplary example we've had here. Continue moving forward on your journey through life but always remember the things you learned at Edgewood. In Kahlil Gibran's book The Prophet he wrote, 'March on. Do not tarry. To go forward is to move toward perfection. March on, and fear not the thorns, or the sharp stones on life's path.'
I've always loved this quote because it's challenged me to never be afraid; to never abstain from something because of fear. I hope that you all heed Gibran's advice. Go forward with your lives and live them to the fullest. Pursue your dreams no matter what they might be-even if you think that they might be unachievable, like becoming a famous actress. March on and fear not the thorns or the sharp stones of life's path because in the end, you know that you always have the people who love you and this community to turn to."
