Students Help Young People Prepare to 'LEAP'

  • Tuesday, Jan 10, 2012

Madison, Wis. (January 4, 2012) - In partnership with the Lussier Community Education Center, Edgewood College has just wrapped up its first semester of the LEAP 2 College Program. The program is based on the UW-Madison PEOPLE Prep program, which includes after-school tutoring and mentoring components. Funding for this initiative – roughly $95,000 - is provided by Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation, made possible by the Wisconsin College Access Challenge Grant.

Through LEAP 2 College programming, 26 students in grades 2-8 from the Lussier Community Education Center work with Edgewood College students to kick off their journey toward a college education. Twice a week student volunteers work with the youth, providing tutoring services and academic enrichment activities. Additionally, students serve as mentors. Mentors and mentees communicate monthly as pen pals. They also meet three times a year during special visits to the Edgewood College campus.

In preparation for college, students in the program develop skills in leadership, education, arts, and play through exploration – the four components that make up the “LEAP” in LEAP 2 College. Students will explore college and career options, while developing the skills they need to successfully pursue a college degree.

On Saturday, December 3 the first campus event was held. Mentors and mentees participated in a “Knowledge for College” scavenger hunt to learn about the different components of college and campus life.

In the spring semester, Edgewood College students will continue to work with the youth on a weekly basis for tutoring and homework help. The next campus visit is scheduled for Saturday March 3, 2012.
