  • Tuesday, Mar 27, 2012

Madison, Wis. (March 26, 2012) – Rita Bender will present the 7th Annual Hatheway History Lecture,  “The Unfinished Civil Rights Struggle” at 7:00 pm Thursday, March 29th, in the Anderson Auditorium on campus.

Rita Bender is the widow of Michael Schwerner, a civil rights worker who was murdered with two other men in Neshoba County, Mississippi in 1964. The county sheriff, one of his deputies, and several others were charged in connection with the killings, but to this day no one has been convicted of murder in the case.

In this lecture, which is free and open to the public, Ms. Bender will ask us to consider “whether we can truly heal as a society if we refuse to acknowledge and confront our past in a meaningful fashion.”

The lecture is sponsored in part by the Bob and Carroll Heideman Crossing Educational Boundaries fund.
