Board members for the Madison Metropolitan School District announced today that they voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Jane Belmore interim superintendent. Dr. Belmore will leave her current post as Dean of the School of Education at Edgewood College to lead MMSD.

“Jane is the right person to lead our district through an important time,” Board President James Howard said. “Not only is she a respected leader in the field of education, but she also brings expertise in our district and our community.

“Over the next year, we will select a permanent superintendent, we will work with staff on the employee handbook process and we will implement exciting new programs to improve achievement for all of our students. The Board is committed to making meaningful progress and moving this district forward, and we know that Jane is the right person for the job.”

A former teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent in MMSD, Dr. Belmore received her PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2000. In addition to both teaching and administrative work at Edgewood College, she has served on the Board of the Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools as well as a co-facilitator of a Wallace Foundation grant to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction focused on effective urban school leadership.

"I am honored by the Board of Education's appointment and grateful to Edgewood College President Dan Carey and my colleagues at the college for their gracious support of my decision to accept this appointment,” Dr. Belmore said. “I see my role as interim superintendent as one of setting priorities and acting on the present initiatives, while laying the foundation for a successful transition to the leadership of a new superintendent.

“In my first weeks, I will focus on connecting with principals, department heads and front line staff, as well as community leaders, including our higher education partners and individual school board members. I look forward to visiting summer sites, meeting teachers and families and getting to work together.”

Pending a finalized contract, Dr. Belmore will start July 16.
