(December 12, 2012) – The Edgewood College Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition inspired by the prints of Rose Marie Conway, O.P, who describes her image making as a “through the window” practice. Over a decades-long career of service with the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, Sr. Rose Marie recorded the world around her through the windows of her offices and homes across the U.S. Her prints are a visual record of sustained service to the human community.
With that inspiration, Through The Window includes prints from a bevy of international artists whose work considers the many ways in which the artist’s gaze is focused. The exhibition is organized around questions about viewership, critical and literal framing, conceptual lens, and engaged studio practice. Some of the artists offer a window into a dream world, a backyard, a remembered landscape, or onto a fictive pictorial space arranged within the bounds of the printing plate. Others consider the ways in which one’s image making is guided or framed by a window or door from the studio out into the world. For some artists, maps and television screens provide the grid and rectangle which frame re-presentations of the world. Both a survey of contemporary printmaking and a meditation on pictorial image making, Through the Window invites viewers to consider the ways in which they encounter a world framed by windows, doors, screens, lenses, theories, and ideas.
Participating artists include Marcelle Benhamou, Joeann Daley, O.P., Marisa Martino, Matthew Bindert, Mollie Oblinger, Jonathan McFadden, Eddy A, Lopez, Agnieszka Lingendza, and Lani Shapton.
Through The Window at the Edgewood College Gallery runs December 10 through January 7, 2013. Priscilla Wood. O.P, will present the lecture “The History of the Veritas Studio” at 4:00 pm, Thursday, December 13, at the Gallery. The lecture is followed by a reception.
