Madison, Wis. (March 20, 2013) – Today the College honors the life and work of Sr. Nona McGreal, President of Edgewood College from 1950-1968, who passed away today at Sinsinawa, Wis, the Mother House of the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa.
Sr. Nona was the first person to officially hold the title ‘president’ of Edgewood College. According to historian Sr. Mary Paynter, McGreal’s accomplishments during her tenure are remarkable. They include the creation of the college campus through an extensive building program, increasing the number of and strengthening the faculty, and obtaining our first national accreditation and recognition for educational excellence. Sr. Nona also established a new corporate structure and a lay board of advisors, shaped a strong curriculum, and increased student enrollment while developing a diverse student body.
President Dan Carey reflects “on this first day of spring we are grateful for the life and gifts Sr. Nona brought to Edgewood College. In her own words she expressed, ‘I feel about Edgewood as you would a living plant, you don’t know which branch will develop further, but you know there is life in it.’”
Funeral services for Sr. Nona at Sinsinawa Mother House are pending. A memorial at Edgewood College will be held at a later date.
