"Dream Big"

  • Tuesday, Apr 15, 2014

Carly Addison, a senior Graphic Design major, has some big plans this summer. She’s been accepted for a paid internship working as a graphic designer in New York City. She’ll be working for Mpowerd, a global supplier of sustainable solar lights.

Graphic Design was not her first academic path. However, a bit of soul-searching and some help from the College, put her in position to make big things happen.

“I decided to follow my instinct and set up a meeting with Agnieszka Ligendza, coordinator of the program. She suggested I sit in on a couple classes to get a feel for the work graphic designers do. I followed her advice and I was immediately convinced that this was what I needed to be doing. I enrolled in the program the next semester and have never regretted it once. I have learned so much in the three short semesters of my new major. All of my professors have been nothing but wonderful, inspiring, and so devoted to helping me and my classmates.” Agnieszka teaching

That inspiration and support extends well beyond the classroom, too.

“Once I began the process of searching for and applying to internships in New York City, Professor Ligendza, was a huge help to me. She revised my resume countless times over winter break and looked over my first cover letter to make sure I was on the right track. Professor Ligendza and another professor, Isabel Rafferty, O.P., were called as my references before I was officially offered the position, so I owe a huge ‘thank you’ to each of them!”

“I have developed some great relationships over the last four years, with friends and also professors. I know it is cliché to say that getting one-on-one time with professors and being ‘more than a number’ is a big advantage to a small school, but it is really true! I have been able to see my professors and advisor any time for help. Agnieszka and I have developed an amazing relationship over the last year and a half. She has helped me in so many ways and I am confident we will still be in contact in the years to come.”

Her advice for fellow students?

“Dream big! New York City is not only the biggest city in the United States, it’s also the design capital of the country. A year ago, I would have never thought I would be where I am today. I felt so unprepared even a few months ago. I didn’t have a portfolio or resume completed, and I had never written a cover letter. But if you’re motivated enough, you can make big things happen.”
