President Scott Flanagan with current Community Scholars and program alumni
Students, alumni, and benefactors of the Community Scholars Program gathered to celebrate student achievements and recognize those who make the program possible at the annual Community Scholars Reception. President Scott Flanagan introduced the scholars and thanked supporters for their involvement in the program. This year’s program also recognized Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation, which announced a $500,000 endowment in support of the program last fall.
Edgewood College first initiated the Community Scholars Program in 2007 to underscore the College’s commitment to diversity and reach out to Dane County high schools. Each year, the program provides three incoming freshman students from Dane County with four-year scholarships to Edgewood College. Students are selected on the basis of their academic potential and financial need and their demonstrated leadership qualities and commitment to serving the community.
As part of their educational experience, each Community Scholar provides at least 100 hours of direct service in partnership with community agencies. In the past year, scholars have provided volunteer services at 14 local organizations that meet vital needs in the community.
