President Flanagan Invited to Nation’s Capital as ‘Champion’ for College Success

Madison, Wis. (March 22, 2016) – Dr. Scott Flanagan has been invited by the U.S. Department of Education to participate in “Championing Completion: Improving College Outcomes for Pell Students.” Only a select number of college and university presidents nationwide have been invited to attend this day-long meeting at the Department of Education in Washington, D.C. on March 24, 2016.

Dr. Flanagan was selected due to the success Edgewood College has had in helping students from the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum succeed.  

In his invitation to attend the meeting, Education Undersecretary Ted Mitchell calls the day one that hopes to “unite leaders who are driving the public narrative and attaining meaningful results to ensure that more students, especially low-income students, complete an affordable, high-quality degree.” The event seeks to ‘recognize colleges and universities that have achieved strong results or made major strides in increasing success for low-income students; highlight promising and proven practices and enable participants to learn from one another; and issue a call to action to deepen impact and improve practices on serving low-income students.’

“We are honored to have President Flanagan represent Edgewood College at this important summit,” said Kari Gribble, Director of Financial Aid at Edgewood College. “We remain committed to making an Edgewood College education affordable, so our students in turn can continue their work preparing for meaningful personal and professional lives of leadership and service.”

The Federal Pell Grant Program provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate students to promote access to postsecondary education. A Federal Pell Grant does not have to be repaid.
