Notes: An acclaimed young artist whose work explores the impermanence of her childhood in the foster care system, Tyanna J. Buie reclaims and rewrites her own experiences. She considers herself to be “fortunate to find my voice, creative vision, and a connection with the outside world through the making of images.”

Novel Occurrences continues to expound upon previous accounts of Buie’s past in a new body of large-scale mono-prints and collage that depict various scenes and objects sourced from rare family photographs. Images, heirlooms, and documents obtained from family members allow her to revisit and revive impressions from past events.

Turning these past experiences into epic and exaggerated accounts that are non-chronological and inconsistent from one event to another, Buie creates alternative perspectives that rewrite her personal history and reaffirm her identity. Using both traditional narrative and non-narrative storytelling, Buie challenges both her family history and her present while attempting to reimagine the future through fragmented parts of the past.

Tyanna J. Buie is the first black woman to win Milwaukee’s Mary Nohl Artist Fellowship (2012). She is the recipient of a 2015 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant and the 2015 Love of Humanity Award from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.

Her work is currently on view in the collection of the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Hyde Park Art Center (Chicago) and the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art (Portland). It has previously been featured at the Museum of Wisconsin Art (2014, West Bend) and at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (2013 Wisconsin Triennial). Buie lives in Detroit, Mich., where she teaches at the College for Creative Studies.
